About Stephen is a perfectionist who strives to excel at whatever he attempts. As well as attending the Banff School of Fine Arts, he has a BA from the University of Guelph where he majored in drama with minors in fine art and psychology. His formal art training and early work was focused primarily on black and white portraits and figure drawing using charcoal, pencil and ink mediums. After university he worked as an actor in summer stock theatre and later in television commercials. He was featured in commercials for milk, beer, soft drinks as well as numerous major clothing brands. This work led to a decade long career as one of Canada's top male models, working in Toronto, Chicago, New York, and Vancouver. Stephen photographs most of his subjects and much of his skill as a photographer was learned on the other side of the camera being photographed by many of North America's top photographers. Art was always a part of Stephen's life, but he became serious about painting in the late 1980's inspired primarily by Andy Warhol and the early work of Vancouver artist Joe Average. It was during this time that Stephen's style changed dramatically from the charcoal and pencil works to the large, colourful, and graphic canvases that he now paints. He continues to explore, develop and perfect this style. Stephen lives and works out of his loft studio near English Bay in the West End of Vancouver. |
